Abstract:Marigold (Tagetes erecta) is a new type of resource plant with ornamental, medicinal, and edible values. The marigold flowers are rich in natural xanthophyll, which makes it the quality raw materials for xanthophyll extraction. The natural xanthophyll is generally regarded as safe and has been widely used in medicine and food industries. With the increasing demand of xanthophyll, there are great demand for breeding of marigold cultivar with high quality and high xanthophyll content. The research progresses on the structure and function of marigold xanthophyll, its extraction and detection technologies, and regulatory genes related to biosynthesis and factors affecting stable storage of marigold xanthophyll were summarized. At last, the research on the regulatory mechanism of xanthophyll biosynthesis and producing elite marigold cultivar to sustain the marigold industry were prospected.
